Chinook Salmon Weathervane, Customer Photo in Mayne Islend, BC, Canada

King Salmon Weathervane

Customer Photo

The weathervane shown in this photo above was commissioned for a 60th birthday present by the recipient's daughters. It is the very first weather vane on Mayne Island - southern Gulf Islands, British Columbia, Canada.

The Chinook Salmon weather vane (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) featured in this photo consists of an all copper fish. The eyes are made from translucent glass jewels. People who order this weather vane get to choose the eye color they want for their weather vane.

When this Salmon weathervane is made with the riverbed and little fish, the size of the salmon is reduced relative to the overall design. (See thumbnail middle left).  When this Salmon weathervane is made with only the salmon by itself, the overall size of the fish is bigger. (See main photo above.)   For example, if you order the Chinook Salmon Weathervane as depicted in the photo above in the Medium Size, you get a two foot sculpture piece that is approximately 24" in length. But, if you would like the river bed added (as seen in the King Salmon Weathervane) ,  the salmon itself will be approximately 16" in size and the overall vane length (from left river bed edge to right river bed edge) would be the 24" measurement.

The Chinook Salmon goes by many other names, such as King Salmon, Spring Salmon, Tyee Salmon, Columbia River Salmon, Black Salmon , Chub Salmon, Hook Bill Salmon, Winter Salmon, Blackmouth Salmon, Quinnat Salmon, Alaska Salmon, and Steelhead Salmon to name just a few.

It is the largest of all Pacific salmon, with weights of individual fish commonly exceeding 30 pounds. A 126-pound King salmon taken in a fish trap near Petersburg, Alaska in 1949 is the largest on record. The largest sport-caught Chinook salmon was a 97-pound fish taken in the Kenai River in Alaska in1986.

Chinook salmon range from the Monterey Bay area of California to the Chukchi Sea area of Alaska. On the Asian coast, Chinook salmon occur from the Anadyr River area of Siberia southward to Hokkaido, Japan.

Because we specialize in custom copper weathervanes, we can also do other Pacific salmon such as a Coho Salmon weathervane, Pink Salmon weathervane, and/or Sockeye Salmon weathervanes. We also offer a number of other sport fishing weathervane designs and fly fishing weathervane designs. You will find a link to our other fish weathervanes designs at the bottom of this page.

The Chinook Salmon weather vane featured in this photo was commissioned by an avid fly fisherman in Illinois. We actually worked from a photo of a beautiful fish he caught in the summer of 2004. The salmon in this weathervane has yellow glass eyes with black pupils that were custom made for this weather vane.  They give it a very life like appearance!

This weathervane can either be made in all copper or the body in copper and the fins and tail in brass for a subtle distinction between the metals. Because these weathervanes are made to order, you get to specify your preference. We can also optionally gild any of the following: the fly, line, speckles, fins and tail so they will remain golden as the rest of the weathervane undergoes its patina process. If you have questions about these choices, we are happy to elaborate on these options and/or make recommendations.

In addition, you can order this Chinook Salmon weathervane in one of two ways:

1. The Chinook Salmon by itself (as depicted above) with or without line and fly or,

2. It can be made with a river bottom and little fish with no line in its mouth (as depicted in the image of the King Salmon below).

Just specify which version you like best (Salmon by itself or Salmon Chasing Fish) and that is how we will make it for yo
