The Humpback Whale weathervane (Megaptera
novaeangliae) featured in this image consists of
a breaching copper Humpback Whale with a brass splash. Because our vanes are made
to order, the choice of metals can be modified at the time an order is placed.
This weathervane design was originally commissioned by a
couple who have a home in Maui (in the Hawaiian Islands) that overlooks a bay
where the Humpbacks come to give birth and raise their young calves. They
thought a weather vane celebrating these amazing and majestic creatures would be
an appropriate crowning touch on top of their new house. |

In December 2004, the couple who
ordered the weathervane shown to the left, walked down to a nearby beach
to see a large humpback whale had recently washed a shore. They were
taken by her beauty and dignity, even in death, and were profoundly
affected by the encounter. In the years that followed, they learned more
about her and, when the time came to add a weathervane to their home,
were able to provide us with photos of her distinctive markings so we
could use gold leaf to create this special portrait version of the Humpback Whale weathervane for them. For more information on Beacon,

We are sometimes asked which designs are most popular. It
is not something we can easily answer. If Ken and I are doing art festivals in
the Pacific Northwest, our Bald Eagles, Moose, Orcas, etc. are very popular. If
we are in the Southwest, people are drawn to our Coyotes, Roadrunners, Quail and
Sun designs. Equestrians love horse weather vanes and pilots like our airplane
designs. This Breaching Humpback Whale design in a case in point. People like to
select weather vanes that reflect what is relevant to them in their lives.
That's why we can never say which designs are most popular; because it all
depends!
An attractive option is to add gold leaf to the vanes.
The gold will stay bright and shiny for many years. Even antique weather
vanes one hundred years old (or even older) can show traces of originally
applied gold leaf. When copper and brass are first put outside, they will
generally weather a deep chocolate brown color. The gold makes a rich contrast
against the darker metal. Once the copper or brass have weathered green, the
contrast with the gold leaf is especially lovely.
In addition to the Breaching Humpback Whale weathervane
design, we also
offer several other whale designs:
