West Coast Weather Vanes has
made a number of Bobwhite weathervanes over the years. The
first Bobwhite Weathervane we made was for an East Coast
couple who were transferred to Silicon Valley for work, and while they
appreciated our California Quail, they missed the familiar Bobwhite from
back home. Other examples of our Bobwhite weathervanes can be
found in Illinois, Tennessee and a hunting lodge in Georgia.
In
our
Bobwhite Family weathervane, our
customers took advantage of the tradition involving
“lucky”
pennies
and we put individual pennies in each bird, representing the birth years of
each family member. In addition, we put the names of each person beneath
“their” Bobwhite. Because we make each weathervane to order, we can vary the
number of chicks we include depending on our customer’s preferences. If you
would like to personalize your Bobwhite vane, just give us a call at (831) 425-5505 and we’d be happy to discuss your custom weathervane with you.
The Northern Bobwhite
weathervane shown here is an all copper bird with optional gold
leafed throat, eye stripe and feet. If you have a competitive background
such as trees, a hillside or another structure in the background behind the
weathervane, the gold leafed accents helps your eye separate the weathervane
from its backdrop, especially once the copper has weathered into the brown
stage.
The Northern Bobwhite is an
important game bird found in the eastern half of the United States and in
northern Mexico. It is a medium sized ground quail with a small but
distinctive crest on its head. The male has a bold whitish throat and eye
stripe. The female is light brown in color. Both sexes have very round
bodies and short tails. When flushed, they are very fast fliers. The
Northern Bobwhite is divided into a number of subspecies including the
Tennessee Red Bobwhite, Tuxedo Bobwhite, Silver Bobwhite, and Blond
Bobwhite.
