Bird Weathervane, Kingfisher
This copper
Kingfisher weather vane featured in this photo
has glass eyes were custom made for this weather vane. They give it a very life like appearance!
The thumbnail on the right shows a design variation of the Kingfisher
Weathervane with a small hummingbird perched on a directional.
The Kingfisher is noted for its striking contrast
between it's light and dark plumage. For that reason, this weather vane comes
with gold leafed sections to mimic the white coloration. As the exposed copper
sections darken, the contrast with the gold becomes more pronounced. The effect
is quite stunning. This design is one of my personal favorites.
The Kingfishers are birds of the three
families Alcedinidae (river kingfishers), Halcyonidae (tree
kingfishers), and Cerylidae (water kingfishers). There are
about 90 species of kingfisher. All have large heads, long, sharp,
pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. They are found throughout the
world.
Here are several more photos of the
Kingfisher weather vane sent to us by several of our customers. Just click on

Kingfisher Weathervane
Photo from Customer
The small Kingfisher weathervane
was sent to us by one of our customers in British Columbia. If you look closely
at the directional letter “W”, you can see a live hummingbird perched there.
They mounted their weathervane on a circular wooden base a top a deck railing. |

The small Kingfisher weathervane
in the second photo is located on a fence railing near a lake in Washington
State. They have Kingfishers nesting in a nearby tree.

The photo above shows the
Kingfisher in British Columbia in its winter habitat. Copper is an excellent
choice for cold climate lakeside or river settings, as it has no ferrous metal
in it so it won’t rust. Copper is also extremely durable. There are a surprising
number of antique copper weathervanes on the east coast that have made it though
more than 100 harsh New England winters and are still up on their perches
working away! |

Below (left & center) is a sequence of photos showing the
approach to one of our customer's home. Their home and gardens are so lovely I
thought I would include the whole series so you can see how their weathervane
looks as you approach their house. Their Kingfisher was made in the medium
(2-foot) size so it should give you a good idea of vane scale relative to house
size. Click on any of the photos to get an enlarged view.
The kingfisher weather vane photo,
below right, is on the roof of a new gazebo overlooking a pond where live
kingfishers hunt for fish. If you look closely at the directional, you'll
see a tiny copper hummingbird that was inspired by the customer photograph
(above) showing a live hummingbird perched on the directional letter.
