Spotted Owl Weathervane

Customer Photo showing installation

The Spotted Owl is the newest member of our owl weathervane family. Again, we have used gold leaf on this weathervane to create the distinctive markings for which this bird is known. We even did a version of the Spotted Owl weathervane for one customer where the owl was clutching a cluster of grapes in its talons.

One of our favorite things to do is to work with our customers on new weathervane designs. For example, we have yet to do a Barn Owl or Saw-whet Owl, both of which would make very beautiful weathervanes. If you have a particular favorite owl, please let us know. It would be a pleasure to work with you to create a new Owl weathervane design.

The Spotted Owl weather vane featured in this photo has glass eyes were custom made for this weather vane.  They give it a very life like appearance!

Our first customers for this Spotted Owl Weathervane were Ann and Bob Dickson. They ordered a medium sized version of the design for Ann's birthday. Once the weathervane was installed, they were gracious enough to send us a photo of the new vane on top of their house. (See photo, above right.)   In the note that accompanied their pictures they wrote, "Our little 11 year old neighbor Jordan said she looks at "HOOTY" every morning as she walks to the school bus so she can see which way the wind is blowing! Very cute. It is beautiful."

The Spotted Owl, Strix occidentalis, is a species of true owl. It is a resident species of forests in western North America, where it nests in tree holes, old bird of prey nests, or rock crevices. Nests can be between 13 and 66 yards (12 to 60 meters) high and usually contain two eggs. Some will contain as many as four. It is a strictly nocturnal owl, which feeds on small mammals and birds.

This owl has a length of 43 cm (17 inches), a wingspan of 114 cm (45 inches), and a weight of around 600 g (21 ounces).
