Decorative Owl Weathervane

The Great Horned Owl was our first owl weathervane design. It was commissioned by a couple in San Francisco in 1995. We have since made Horned Owl weathervanes for customers all over the country.   We even made one for a client in South Africa! Because we make each weathervane to order, they can be made entirely out of copper or we can also use copper and brass in combination. However, probably the most popular way we make them is to add optional gold leaf to the facial markings, neck band and legs. The parts that we gild will stay a light golden color as the rest of the weathervane patinas first a deep chocolate brown and then eventually that distinctive turquoise green for which copper is known. We also purchase Owl taxidermy eyes to give the owls a more lifelike and animated appearance.

As with most of our weathervanes, we make the Great Horned Owl weathervane in four sizes: Small size (one-foot sculpture piece), Medium (2-foot sculpture piece), Large Size (3-foot sculpture piece) and Extra-Large (4-foot sculpture piece). The larger the structure on which it is to be installed, the larger you want the weathervane to be. Probably our most popular sized weathervane is the medium size. Typically, it will work on anything from a one or two car garage to a 2500 square foot single story home. The extra-large sized weathervanes are designed to go atop buildings that are over 6,000 square feet in size.

The Great Horned Owl, (Bubo virginianus), also known as the Tiger Owl, is a large Owl native to the Americas. It is an adaptable bird with a vast range and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. Great Horned Owls range in length from 18-25 inches (46–68 cm) and have a wingspan of 40-60.5 in (101–153 cm); Females are larger than males, an average adult being 22 in (55 cm) long with a 49 in (124 cm) wingspan and weighing about 3.1 lbs (1400 g).
