This Pelican
Weather Vane may be ordered in a variety of ways:
It can be made with or without a fish in its beak. The fish can be made with
either gold-leafed, nickel silver, or copper depending on your preference. We
have made the Pelican with
blue eyes or with yellow eyes, depending on customer preference. Many of our
customers ask us to add optional gold leaf to the Pelican’s beak and legs. This
creates a nice contrast when the copper weathers and turns chocolate brown in
color. Yet another option for the Sitting Pelican Weathervane is
to make it with the optional waves. Personally, I like the optional waves as it
creates a nice sense of balance between the vertical dimension and the
horizontal dimension. We sometimes add optional gold leaf to the crests of the
waves to create further visual interest.
Our standard Sitting Pelican weather vane is offered in four
different sizes; one-foot, two-foot, three-foot, or even a four-foot sculpture
piece, with a number of options in each size. Please give us a call for a
personalized quote based on your own preferences.
We can also make a specific type of Pelican such as a Great White Pelican,
Australian Pelican or Spot-Billed Pelican depending on customer preference.
The Sitting
Pelican weathervane
was our first Pelican weathervane design. The Soaring
Pelican is our most recent design. Click on the thumbnails on the right

A pelican,
derived from the Greek word πελεκυς pelekys (meaning
“axe” and this term is applied to birds that cut wood with their bills or
beaks), is a large water bird with
a large throat pouch, belonging
to the bird family
Pelecanidae. Along with the darters, cormorants, gannets, boobies, frigate
birds, and tropicbirds, pelicans
make up the order Pelecaniformes.
Modern pelicans, of which there are eight species, are found on all continents
except Antarctica. They
primarily inhabit warm regions, though breeding ranges reach 45° south
(Australian Pelican, P.
conspicillatus) and 60° North (American White Pelicans, P.
erythrorhynchos, in western Canada). Birds
of inland and coastal waters, they are absent from polar regions, the deep
ocean, oceanic islands, and inland South
America.
The Brown Pelican occurs on coasts in the Americas from Washington and Virginia south
to northern Peru and
the mouth of the Amazon
River, as well as along the west coast of the United States. Some immature birds
may stray to inland freshwater lakes. After nesting, North
American birds move in
flocks further north along the coasts, returning to warmer waters for winter.
Their young are hatched in broods of about 3, and eat around 150 lbs. of fish in
the 8–10 month period they are cared for.
This bird is
distinguished from the American
White Pelican by
its brown body and its habit of diving for fish from
the air, as opposed to co-operative fishing from the surface. It eats mainly fish and amphibians
as well as crustaceans.
Groups of Brown Pelicans often travel in single file,
