The
Penguin weathervane featured here can be typically made with a
combination of copper and optional gold leaf. With this combination, the copper
will weather a deep chocolate brown (almost black) color while the gold leaf,
keeps its light golden tonality. The longer the weathervane is outside, the more
it will look like an actual penguin. If you prefer, it can also be made in all
copper or using a combination of copper and brass, although the contrast between
the different markings will no longer be as prominent as when we use the gold
leaf.
The
Emperor penguin and chick weathervane (Aptenodytes forsteri) shown here
can be made one of two ways. We can make a single adult Emperor penguin or we
can make a parent penguin with a chick. If you order the single adult
penguin, it is actually larger than the adult in the combined penguin and chick
weathervane. That is because we need to reduce the size of each individual
sculpture piece in order to fit two birds onto the same arrow. However, because
the penguin has such a recognizable profile, it works well either way. If you
are on the borderline between two sized weathervanes (for example, a two-foot
sculpture piece or a three-foot sculpture piece), and you like the combination
version the best, it may be better to err on the larger of the two sizes.
.
The King
Penguin and Emperor Penguin are very close in appearance with only subtle
differences in their markings. That is why we offer both a single penguin and
penguin and chicks option for both the Emperor and King Penguin weathervanes.
We have an
interesting Penguin weathervane story about this particular design. One of our
small (one-foot sculpture piece) Penguin and Chick weathervanes spends about 4
months a year in Antarctica. It was ordered by a meteorologist who does research
on the hole in the ozone layer at the South Pole. He mounts it on the deck
railing just outside the kitchen/activity room window where the scientists can
see it when they gather together for meals. We literally do have one of our
weathervanes on every continent on the planet – at least for part of the year!
If you are a
fan of penguins, in addition to the Emperor Penguin weathervane featured here,
we could also make you a King Penguin, or any of the following: a crested
penguin, such as the Rockhopper, or one of the stiff-tailed penguins, such as
the Gentoo Penguin, or the Chinstrap Penguin, or the Adelie penguin, or a Little
Blue Penguin if that is your preference. Just give us a call. We’d be happy to
discuss your ideas with you.
