Robin Weathervane with Chicks in Nest
This
Robin weathervane with six chicks is a variation on our standard
Robin and Chicks weathervane.
We have made two versions with six chicks and one version with five chicks. When
we make this weathervane with four chicks, each baby can sit on one of the
North, South, East and West directional arms, however, when more (or less)
chicks are desired, we can build a nest to accommodate them.
As
with our original design, this is a favorite with families with numerous
children. Because our weathervane are made to order, our customers can select
individual
eye colors
for each bird, have special
“lucky” pennies
put in each chick representing the age of their children and we can even put
little
inscriptions
inside the nest with each child’s name. The parent bird, which turns in the wind
to feed the worm to the various babies, can also have lucky pennies from the
year the parents were born.
I
particularly like this design with the
optional gold leaf.
Gilding the bird’s beaks and the parent bird’s breast feathers creates a very
nice contrast with the weathered copper. I also think it looks good to make the
leaves in brass. Brass has a lot of copper in it so patinas similarly to copper
but with subtle variations as it moves through the process. However, because
each vane is made to individual order, we work with our customers to determine
what metal combination works best for them.
Surprisingly, this particular weathervane design is often ordered in conjunction
with another vane. Customers who have ordered the Robin and Chick weathervane
have also ordered our
Fiddler on the Roof weathervane,
a
Children and Kite weathervane,
the
Cheshire Cat weathervane,
Chanticleer Rooster weathervane,
and even a
Raven weathervane!
When our customers order two or more vanes, the additional one qualifies for our
multiple purchase 10% discount.
Although several of these
weathervanes have graced roofs and turrets, other popular places to put this
vane include garden settings, gazebos, deck railings and even a children’s
playhouse. The Robin weather vanes with Chicks have been very popular as
Mother’s Day gifts, anniversary and special birthday presents although it is
also an ideal gift for gardeners and bird watchers as well.
The original idea of incorporating
the directionals into an active design element of the turning weathervane, is an
original design concept by West Coast Weather Vanes. We have used this
concept on a number of our weathervanes, such as our
Cat & Mice Weathervane,
Wine
Bottle & Wine Glasses Weathervane, and
Hunting Bald Eagle Weathervane.
Our design concept has now been copied by many other vane makers.
The American Robin (Turdus
migratorius) is a migratory songbird of the thrush family. This version of
the weathervane features baby chick s in a nest. When the wind
blows, the mother robin "feed" her baby chicks. |
