Cat Weathervane, Playing with Mice

The Persian
Cat weathervane featured here is a variation on our original
Cat and Hummingbird
weathervane. One of our customer’s saw
the original version and liked it but wanted her weathervane to look like her
Persian cats. We put
inscriptions on either side of the horizontal tube with her cat’s names. She
chose translucent blue
glass eyes although, because we make each weathervane to order, our
customers can select from a variety of colors include topaz, green, emerald and
blue. We also included
“lucky” pennies
from the year each of her cats was
born. The reeds and flower were made in brass and the cat and hummingbird were
made in copper although we work with each customer to determine what metals they
would like used in their weathervane.
The
thumbnailed images of the Persian Cat weathervane show another variation on this
particular design. In this case, our customer had a beautiful white Persian cat
so we used gold leaf to mimic its coloration. We can also use nickel silver or
Palladium to create a more silvery effect, if desired. We made her cat with
topaz colored eyes and we personalized the vane further by substituting a tree
branch for the reeds, flower and hummingbird. Her weathervane was mounted atop a
35 foot tall flag pole.
As is true with all our designs,
you can see that personalizing one of our weathervanes is certainly possible. If
you have something special in mind, please give us a call or drop us an email
and we would be happy to discuss what would be involved in making a
one-of-a-kind weathervane for you.
The
trinomial name of the domestic cat is Felis silvestris catus. Its
closest pre-domesticated ancestor is believed to be the African wild cat,
Felis silvestris lybica.[1]
Humans have developed several dozens breeds of cat, in a variety of colours.
Cats have
lived in close association with humans for at least 9,500 years. Legends
and myths about the cat exist in many cultures, from the ancient Egyptians and
Chinese to the Vikings. They have been both revered and vilified by different
cultures.

Persian & Westie Weathervane
Customer Photos
 |
The Westie & Cat photos were sent
to us by a customer in Athens, Greece. We literally created portrait sculptures
of both his cat and dog, matching their unique markings with the addition of
gold leaf. As you can see, he mounted his new weathervane on a deck railing just
outside their living room. Here is an excerpt from the note they sent us along
with the photos. “I'
m sending you some photos of the weathervane placed in our new house. It has
been the trademark of the neighborhood. All our friends are asking where did we
find it and who did this remarkable item. We are very proud of it because our
house is unique thanks to your beautiful creation. I gave your address to my
friends and probably you will have some more e-mails from Athens in the future.
What else can I say I am, and my wife too, very lucky to know you and it is not
just a decorative thing this weathervane.”
