This Dairy Cow and Boy weather vane is a variation on our  Dairy Cow weathervane. The Holstein cow featured in this weathervane is actually based on a portrait of our customer’s prize dairy cow! In addition to working from photos of their Holstein, they also sent us photos of their son, Carl. He was the model for the farm boy in this weathervane, right down to the bowl haircut and blue eyes!  Because we make our weathervanes out of copper, which is a very long lasting metal, it is possible that someday, when Carl is a grandfather, he can hand this weathervane to his own grandchildren! In the New England area, there are old copper weathervanes that have been in the same family for six or seven generations.

This weathervane was made using a combination of copper and brass. It can also be made with optional gold leafed accents, for example, the white parts of the cow can be gilded, as can the boy’s face, arms and legs. As the copper darkens over time, the contrast with the lighter golden sections creates a nice dynamic tension as the vane moves through the patina process.

We also incorporate a cowbell as a part of this particular weathervane to give it a nostalgic feel of harkening back to an earlier, simpler time. In addition to depicting a Holstein, because we specialize in custom copper weathervanes, we could also create a Jersey cow weathervane, an Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, a Guernsey weather vane or even a Milking Shorthorn.  If you prefer a young milkmaid or a farmer instead of the boy, we can certainly work with you to realize your vision. The cow is made with brown glass eyes with black pupils to give it a more animated appearance.

Cattle (often called cows in vernacular and contemporary usage, or kye as the Scots plural of cou) are domesticated ungulates, a member of the subfamily Bovines of the family Bovidae. They are raised as livestock for meat (called beef and veal), dairy products (milk), leather and as draught animals (pulling carts, plows and the like). In some countries, such as India, they are subject to religious ceremonies and respect. It is estimated that there are 1.3 billion head of cattle in the world today.

Cows - Cattle are ruminants, meaning that they have a digestive system that allows them to utilize otherwise undigestible foods by repeatedly regurgitating and rechewing them as "cud." The cud is then reswallowed and further digested by specialized microorganisms that live in the rumen. These features allow cattle to thrive on grasses and other vegetation.
