Cow Weathervane, (Holstein Cow Weathervane)
This
Dairy
Cow weather vane is a variation on our
Boy with Dairy Cow weathervane.
The Holstein cow featured in this weathervane is actually based on a
portrait of our customer’s prize dairy cow! We used a combination of copper and
gold leaf to indicate its distinctive markings. As the copper weathers to a deep
chocolate brown color, the lighter colored gold will stand out in brilliant
contrast. The longer the weathervane is outside, the more like a real Holstein
cow the weathervane will become!
We also
incorporate a cowbell as a part of this particular weathervane to give it a
nostalgic feel of harkening back to an earlier, simpler time. In addition to
depicting a Holstein, because we specialize in custom copper weathervanes, we
could also create a Jersey cow weathervane, an Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, a Guernsey
weather vane or even a Milking Shorthorn. The cow is made with brown glass eyes
with black pupils to give it a more animated appearance. I am also enclosing an
earlier version of this design where we used copper and brass to give the cow
its distinctive two tone coloration. While the contrasting coloration is not
nearly as dramatic when we use copper and brass, this is another way we can
approach making this weathervane.

about our Dairy Cow Weathervane
Cattle
(often called cows in
vernacular and contemporary usage, or kye as the Scots
plural of cou) are domesticated ungulates, a member of the subfamily
Bovines of the family
Bovidae. They are raised
as livestock for meat (called beef and veal), dairy products (milk), leather and
as draught animals (pulling carts, plows and the like). In some countries, such
as India, they are subject to religious ceremonies and respect. It is estimated
that there are 1.3 billion head of cattle in the world today.
Cows - Cattle are ruminants,
meaning that they have a digestive system that allows them to utilize otherwise
undigestible foods by repeatedly regurgitating and rechewing them as "cud." The
cud is then reswallowed and further digested by specialized microorganisms that
live in the rumen. These features allow cattle to thrive on grasses and other
vegetation.
