The
Texas Longhorn weathervane featured in this photo was made of hand
shaped copper with gold leafed horns. Arriving in the United States via Mexico,
the Texas Longhorn is probably one of the most distinctive breeds
of cattle today. Instantly recognizable, a Texas Longhorn
is a perfect subject for creating a classic weathervane design. We can even use
optional gold leaf to match individual markings, add a brand to make it a
one-of-a-kind sculpture piece and/or put the name of the operation on a custom
designed arrow fletching. When proudly displayed on top of a barn on a ranch, it
can be written off as an advertising business expense. We even made one
Texas Longhorn weathervane for an enthusiastic alum of the University of
Texas at Austin.
Cattle
(often called cows in
vernacular and contemporary usage, or kye as the Scots
plural of cou) are domesticated ungulates, a member of the subfamily
Bovines of the family
Bovidae. They are raised
as livestock for meat (called beef and veal), dairy products (milk), leather and
as draught animals (pulling carts, plows and the like). In some countries, such
as India, they are subject to religious ceremonies and respect. It is estimated
that there are 1.3 billion head of cattle in the world today.
Cows - Cattle are ruminants,
meaning that they have a digestive system that allows them to utilize otherwise
undigestible foods by repeatedly regurgitating and rechewing them as "cud." The
cud is then reswallowed and further digested by specialized microorganisms that
live in the rumen. These features allow cattle to thrive on grasses and other
vegetation. The Texas longhorn is a breed of cattle known
for its characteristic horns, which can extend to six feet in width and have a
slight upward turn at their tips, as well as for their distinctive burnt orange
coloring.
