Our Portuguese
Water Dog weathervanes continue to be very popular designs as you can see from
the different variations we have done on this design. The trotting PWD featured
here is the only one that is a non-mirror image dog (this means the patter
pieces on one side of the dog are distinctly different than on the other side of
the dog (see reverse view of the Trotting PWD as an example). Non-mirror image
designs can convey a sense of motion and are actually more difficult to make
because of the challenge in aligning the opposite sides of the weathervane when
soldering it together.
The photos of
the PWD on the cupola next to the chimney were graciously sent to us by some
wonderful customers in North Carolina. We made their water dog weathervane with
a gold leafed collar and dog bone shaped name tag. In the sunset photo you can
see the last rays of the sun glinting off the gold leaf. In the email that
accompanied their photos, they said,
“A
little late but as promised I have attached pictures of the wonderful
Portuguese Water Dog weathervane we are so proud of. Thanks so much for
your time and help in getting it made and installed. We are thoroughly
enjoying it."
We’ve also
enclosed another variation we have done on this particular design. The photo
(above left) of the two trotting Portuguese Water Dogs shown here was for a
special commission. The customer wanted two wall sculptures that he could mount
indoors. In this case, we made the dogs brass with copper collars, but they can
be made out of copper with or without the personalized collars
The
photo shown here was for a special commission. The customer wanted 2 wall
sculptures that he could mount indoors. This design can also be made as a
weather vane. In this case, we made the dogs brass with copper collars,
but they can be made out of copper with or without the personalized collars.
The
Portuguese Water Dog (trotting version) weather vane featured in this
photo is depicted with a Retriever Clip however it can also be made with a Lion
Clip, if you prefer. Because these weather vanes are made to order, you can
specify which coat you would like when you talk with us.
As
described above, all our dog weathervanes can be made with an
optional collar. We can actually inscribe your dog's name on the collar in
either 1/4" or 1/8" tall stamped letters (cost is $1 per letter) or we
can add a tag in the shape of a dog bone, a heart or a circle. Using a
combination of these options, we can incorporate up to three dog's names on your
weather vane! What we do is put one dog's name on one side of the collar,
another dog's name on the opposite side of the collar and a third name on the
dog tag. The collar and/or tag can be optionally gold leafed as well. (See below
for details on gold leafing.)
Originating back to the 1500s in Portugal, Portuguese Water Dogs
were originally used by fishermen. They were used to send messages between
boats, to retrieve fish and articles from the water, and to guard the fishing
boats. They helped to bring in nets and to save fishermen when they fell in the
water. During the off-season, Portuguese Water Dogs would double
as herding dogs. They were very popular, and this might be where they picked up
their loyal and dependable characteristics. Eventually commercial fishing
equipment made the dogs unnecessary. They fell out of favor and almost became
extinct. At one point, there were only 25 Portuguese Water Dogs in
the world. Since then, breeders have been carefully bringing back the breed.
There are now thousands of Porties throughout the world
