This
copper Rhodesian
Ridgeback Dog weathervane featured here was commissioned by a
couple who have a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog. Theirs is a female “Rhodie” but we
can also make the dog male, depending on our customer’s preferences. We use a
custom shaped hammer to create the distinctive ridging along the dog’s upper
back for which this breed is famous.
Our happy customers provided us with
a photo (above right, bottom) of their wall sculpture, along with this note:
"We finally hung “Kari,” the Rhodesian Ridgeback
weathervane, and wanted you to see her in all her glory over our couch. Dick did
a bang-up job hiding the hooks. We are working with an interior designer named
Candi Gester. She went gaga over our weathervanes. I sent her link to your Web
site. Don't be surprised if Candi contacts you one of these days."
As an option,
our customers are welcome to provide photographs of their dog if they would like
a personalized version of this weathervane design. Glass eye color can be
selected to accommodate a variety of dog eye colors. All our dog weathervanes
can be made with an optional collar. We can actually inscribe your dog's name on
the collar in either 1/4" or 1/8" tall stamped letters or we can add a tag in
the shape of a dog bone, a heart or a circle. Using a combination of these
options, we can incorporate up to three dog's names on your weather vane! What
we do is put one dog's name on one side of the collar, another dog's name on the
opposite side of the collar and a third name on the dog tag. The collar and/or
tag can be optionally gold leafed as well. (See below for details on gold
leafing.)
The
Rhodesian Ridgeback is a breed of dog from Southern Africa. The breed
originated in Rhodesia (modern day Zimbabwe) where the first breed standard was
written in 1922 and the Parent club formed by Francis R. Barnes in Bulawayo.
Also known as the "African Lion Hound" or "African Lion Dog"
(Simba Inja in Ndebele, Shumba Imbwa in Shona) because of their unique ability
to harass a lion and keep it at bay while awaiting their master to make the kill
