This copper Whippet Dog weathervane features glass eyes, gold leafed patterns and distinctive tooling which gives the fur a realistic texture on the body.   Customers can provide photographs of their special canine pets for a customized  weather vane depicting  their favorite dog.  Glass eye color can be selected to accommodate a  variety of dog eye colors.  Personalized dog weathervanes can feature gold-leafing to bring out your pet's distinctive markings, as well as dog collars bearing your dog's name.

The Whippets featured above were done in our Large size (3 foot long sculpture piece). In the Large size each of the Whippets is approximately one and one half feet long. In the Medium size (2 foot long sculpture piece), each Whippet is approximately one foot long.

All our dog weathervanes can be made with an optional collar. We can actually inscribe your dog's name on the collar in either 1/4" or 1/8" tall stamped letters (cost is $1 per letter) or we can add a tag in the shape of a dog bone, a heart or a circle. Using a combination of these options, we can incorporate up to three dog's names on your weather vane! What we do is put one dog's name on one side of the collar, another dog's name on the opposite side of the collar and a third name on the dog tag. The collar and/or tag can be optionally gold leafed as well. (See below for details on gold leafing.)

The Whippet  is a breed of dog, specifically a member of the sighthound family. They are active and playful and are physically similar to a small greyhound.

Whippets were bred to hunt by sight, coursing game in open areas at high speeds. One can find numerous representations of small greyhound-like hounds in art dating back to Roman times but the first use of the word "whippet" was in 1610. There is a picture by Jean Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) of "Misse", one of two English whippets presented to Louis XV, in the Washington National Gallery. In the Nineteenth century, whippet racing was a national sport in England, more popular than football but the modern whippet was created when the English Kennel Club recognized the whippet as a show dog in 1890 and starting recording pedigrees. Early specimens were taken from the race track by dog fanciers of the time and exported all over the world. The whippet's versatility as a hunting, racing, exhibition or companion dog soon made it the most popular of the sighthound breeds. Like all dogs, it was often crossed with other breeds to suit its owner's purpose but it was not as is often mistakenly stated, "created" by working class people in the North of England although it was - and is - extremely popular there.

These two thumbnails show personalized Greyhound heads we did for a customer who wanted a Double Greyhound weathervane in the same pose as the Double Whippets. Her dogs were brindles. If you click on the thumbnails to enlarge them, you should be able to see the brindle markings and some of the detail that goes into their construction including teeth, tongue and brown glass eyes.

The photo to the left shows Ken and me delivering the Large Double Greyhound weathervane (detailed above) to two of our customers. The weather vane was a birthday present for the husband. His wife, Catherine, worked with us in secret on the design by sending us photos of their two dogs, Pilot and Gizmo. We then reworked our existing design to make it a portrait of their two dogs. In the photo, Catherine's surprised husband is holding the vane and the two Greyhounds that posed for the vane are in the foreground. We did this particular sculpture with brindle markings and gave the female dog a gold leafed chest and tail tip to match her actual markings. Both dogs have gold leafed collars with heart shaped tags with their names on them.
