West Coast Weather Vanes offers to styles of
Huacaya Alpaca weathervanes. The larger image shown above is Version 2 and the
smaller image is Version 1. The price in each size is the same for either
version. We also offer a Suri Alpaca weathervane. To see our Suri Alpaca design,
please click the link above for Pricing Information link below.
Among our earliest weathervane designs were
Llamas and Alpacas so these animals have a special place in our hearts. Version
1 is one of our very first weathervane designs and Version 2 came along about
ten years later. Version 1 is made in a style called swell-bodied which means
the pattern pieces are the same on both sides of the weathervane. The
hindquarters on Version 2 are different on each side of the sculpture piece
which gives the sculpture piece a slightly more complex silhouette when seen
against the sky.
The Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is a
domesticated breed of South American camel-like ungulates, derived from the wild
vicuņa. It resembles a sheep in appearance, but is larger and has a long erect
neck.
Alpacas are kept in herds that graze on the
level heights of the Andes of southern Peru, northern Bolivia, and northern
Chile at an altitude of 3500 to 5000 meters above sea-level, throughout the
year. Alpacas are considerably smaller than llamas and unlike them
are not used as beasts of burden but are valued only for their fiber (wool),
used for making blankets and ponchos in South America, and sweaters, blankets,
socks and coats in other parts of the world. The fiber comes in more than 22
natural colours.
