Alpaca Weathervane,
Suri Alpaca

The very first weathervane we ever made was a
Llama weathervane. A neighbor knew we were starting this new business venture
and asked us to make a Llama weathervane for him. After tinkering in our studio
for three or four months, we summoned our courage and showed him the finished
piece. He loved it and encouraged us to go to a Llama and Alpaca Show to display
our work.
We worked feverishly for several more months
making Llama weathervanes and then took another deep breath and decided to
attend a Llama Show in the central California foothills. As we were setting up
our new display booth for the very first time, we were immediately asked if we
could make an Huacaya Alpaca weathervane by one of the show attendees. We agreed
to do so but our nerves failed us when another attended asked us to make a Suri
Alpaca.

This is a technically challenging weathervane to
make as the Suri Alpaca's wool hangs in long beautiful rope-like strands. All
the hand shaping required to create these intricate folds requires a high level
of skill. The copper expands under the constant hammering so getting everything
to align correctly when we go to solder it together demands a good understanding
of the material and the ability to compensate in advance for its tendency to
deform. If we undertake a project, we want to do it right and, at the time, we
just felt we could not do it justice.
It was nearly a four years later before we felt
our technical skill was at the level we demanded of ourselves to take on this
project. But the wait was well worth it. This is now one of our favorite
weathervane designs. The strong and distinctive profile lends itself perfectly
to a weathervane and the shadows cast by the sun on the surface of the copper
creates a pleasing and intricate play of light and dark across its surface which
keeps it visually interesting as it moves through the patina process.
