Friesian Horse Weathervane
This
Friesian Horse Weather Vane is one of our most spectacular
horse weathervanes. It is also one of our most popular.
Because Friesians are black, we usually make it all copper,
however we have gold leafed the mane and tail. In the image shown below,
left, you can see we can also include a ranch name on the fletching below the
horse's hooves. The image below on the right, is a good example of the
entirely different appearance you get when you add gold leaf.
The
Friesian is an example of a large boned horse in comparison with the
more refined appearance of an
Arabian Horse. Because we hand shape each weathervane and
have two decades of experience, we are able to convey the very different
musculature specific to each breed.
The Friesian
horse is a breed of horse from
Friesland, a province of
the Netherlands. Although originally bred as a draft horse, the breed is
graceful and nimble for its size and later developed into a finer-boned
nobleman's steed. During the Middle Ages, Friesian horses were in great
demand as
destriers throughout
Europe since their size enabled them to carry a knight in full armor. After a
few close calls with breed extinction, the modern day Friesian horse is growing
in numbers and popularity, used both in harness and under saddle. Most recently,
the breed is being introduced to the field of dressage
.

Our customer for the Friesian featured above
had the name of her ranch added to the weathervane in gold leaf.
We also gilded the stallion's mane and tail. If you would like a gold
leafed fletching similar to this on your weathervane, please call for a
quote. We can even match particular fonts! |
The two Extra-Large Friesians shown above
were done for another customer. We had finished gilding the mane and
tail on the first horse but had not yet gilded second one. I've enclosed
this photo here to contrast a vane with gold leaf and one without.
