Piaffe Horse, Dressage Weathervane Customer Photo used for portrait weathervane

The
Piaffe Horse, Dressage
weathervane featured (middle right photo) was made as a portrait weathervane.
We used optional gold leaf to match the markings on the horse’s legs and
head (see photo of the horse that was the model for the vane). We also
streaked the mane and tail with gold to create highlights. After receiving
the photo of our customer’s horse, we worked up a drawing for the customer’s
approval. The end result is the finished weathervane shown
here. Because we make each weathervane sculpture piece to individual order,
she also requested that we make her horse male. Our customer was also
gracious enough to arrange for us to receive a photo of her weathervane once
it had been installed.
In the
photo (above, right) , we made a more standard version of the
design in the small (one-foot sculpture piece) size. In this case, we
made the horse in copper and the mane and tail in brass. Brass, which is
primarily composed of copper, patinas similarly to copper but will show
a subtle variation in color over time. While brass and gold leaf look
similar when a weathervane is new, the gold leaf remains shiny and
golden so over time the distinction between the gold leaf and the copper
becomes more pronounced.
The decision
to go all copper, copper and brass, or copper with gold leaf depends on how
prominent you want the piece to appear in its setting. Personally, I am a fan
of the gold leafing because it keeps the visual dynamic more interesting as it
moves through the patina process.
The
Piaffe is a dressage movement
where the horse is in a highly collected and cadenced trot, in place or
nearly in place. The center of gravity of the horse should be more towards
the hind end, with the hindquarters slightly lowered and great bending of
the joints in the hind legs. The front end of the horse is highly mobile,
free, and light, with great flexion in the joints of the front legs, and the
horse remains light in the hand. The horse should retain a clear and even
rhythm, show great impulsion, and ideally should have a moment of suspension
between the foot falls. As in all dressage, the horse should perform in a
calm manner and remain on the bit with a round back.
The Piaffe
was originally used in battle to keep the horse focused, warm, and moving,
ready to move forward into battle. In modern times the Piaffe is mostly
taught as an upper level movement in Classical dressage and as a Grand Prix
level movement. Additionally, it is needed to develop the levade and from
that the airs above the ground.
