Mare with Foal Weathervane Running
Reverse View

Mare with Foal weathervane
installed on riding arena |
|
This
running Mare with Foal weather vane was recently commissioned by a
customer who had seen our original standing mare and foal weathervane (above
left), but wanted a more active design. Hers is an all copper version of
the design, in contrast with the standing mare with foal which has gold-leafed
accents.
We have
included the reverse view of this weather vane to illustrate a distinction in
the way weathervanes can be made. This weather vane is an example of a
non-mirror image design. More typically, a weather vane is exactly the
same on both sides, however, to convey a sense of action, it often works better
to have two distinctly different sides. While more dynamic, this style of
weathervane requires greater skill to construct.
The photo
to the right (above) was graciously sent to us by our customer in Kentucky who
installed it on top of her 50 foot diameter riding arena. Her weathervane
is our large size (3-ft) version of the running Mare with Foal
weather vane.
The
horse (Equus caballus, sometimes seen as a subspecies of the Wild
Horse, Equus ferus caballus) is a large odd-toed ungulate mammal, one of
ten modern species of the genus Equus. Horses first evolved in the
Americas, but went extinct there until reintroduced by Europeans. Horses have
long been among the most economically important domesticated animals and are
prominent in religion and mythology. The horse has played an important role as
transportation, as a source of food, fuel, and clothing, and as a weapon,
A mare
(from an old Germanic word, possibly derived from Gaulish) is a female horse.
The word is also an etymological root of marshal (originally Latin
marescalcus 'horse servant', or stable hand).
The word
can also be used for other female equine animals.
