Detail of Reining Horse
Weathervane |
|
This
Reining Horse
weathervane is based on customer provided photos of her horse
and rider sliding to a stop during a competition. The details in the saddle,
blanket and harness can be seen in the photo above right. Please click on the
thumbnails to view larger images.
Another
customer who commissioned an
Arabian
Horse
Weathervane
in the large size, also ordered a medium (2 foot)
Golden
Retriever
weathervane.
At each end of her new barn, she placed a weathervane. When the wind blows one
way, the golden retriever chases her Arab, and when the wind switches
directions, the Arab chases her golden retriever weathervane (thumbnails above
left). This playfulness mimics the relationship of her animals, which are best
friends and play together all the time.
Something
similar to this could be done to make this a Cutting Horse weathervane.
A Calf or Cow weathervane could also be placed on the roof (or a cupola) near
the Cutting Horse weathervane. As the wind turns the two sculpture
pieces, they would interact up on the roof. It would be fun to look up a
different times throughout the day and throughout the year, to watch them
dodge and weave and who has the upper hand at that particular moment.
The body of this Reining Horse Weathervane
is copper with gold leafing on the mane, tail, socks, blanket, and hands & face
of the rider. We can also use gold leaf and
palladium leaf to match individual markings on your horse (for example, white
socks or a forehead blaze), Please contact us for more information if you are
interested in personalizing one of the Reining Horse weathervanes
for yourself.
Selecting the
size of your weathervane greatly depends on where you plan to display it.
For instance, many of our Horse Weathervanes are installed on the top or cupola
on the owner's barns. Most barns are quite large, typically 60’ x 100’ as is
the cupola on top of it. A four-foot weathervane might seem very large when you
are standing right next to it but the important thing is to consider the
weathervane in relationship to the structure upon which it will sit. The bigger
the structure, the larger you will want the weathervane to be. I’ve enclosed a
photo of Ben, one of our weathervane makers, next to a Large (three-foot)
Passage Horse and Rider weathervane he had just completed. For perspective, the
Arabian horse weathervane (above, top left) is a full foot larger than
this weathervane!

We completed three weathervanes
for a customer’s 3000 square foot barn in Pennsylvania. The two Sliding Horse
weathervanes were made in the medium (2-foot) size and went on slightly smaller
cupolas. The Musical Clef weathervane was made in the large (3-foot) size and
went on a larger center cupola. Our customer graciously sent us photos after the
vanes were installed and gave us permission to put them on our website for
others to see and enjoy as well.
