This
Indian Weather Vane is
one of earliest human figure weathervanes. In preparation for making
weathervanes based on the human form, we brought a number of live models into
the studio to do figure studies. We did anatomy studies, modeled in clay and did
lots and lots of drawings. This was very helpful as all our weathervanes are
shaped by hand with rawhide hammers over oak posts, based on hand and eye
observations. A lot of skill is required to hand shape anatomical features such
as stomach muscles, cheek bones, etc into flat sheet copper. This is especially
true when we are making a medium (two-foot tall sculpture piece) where the face
itself is only about 3 inches in size!
We used
copper in combination with optional gold leaf to create the weathervane featured
in the photo shown here. This Brave Weathervane can also be made
in all copper or using a combination of copper and brass. We also used brown
glass eyes to give him a more realistic appearance. West Coast Weather Vanes
offers several other Native American weathervane designs (please
see images above). Each weathervane is made to order so the head dress,
clothing, ornamentation, etc. can all be personalized depending on our
customer’s interest.
Some years
ago we did a fun project that involved this Brave weather vane.
A pair of weathervanes were commissioned by a
woman who was a graduate of CAL Berkeley. Her husband, a graduate of Stanford
University, was celebrating his 60th birthday
so she ordered an Indian weathervane (as it was the school mascot at the time he
attended school) to celebrate both his birthday and his connection with
Stanford. For years, they have had a friendly football rivalry so, of course,
she also ordered a Bear
weather vane.representing her school mascot.
They have a
second home at Lake Tahoe (in the Sierra Nevada Mountains) with two side-by-side
dormers. On one dormer, they put the Indian weathervane and on the other dormer,
they put the
Grizzly Bear weathervane. When the wind
blows one direction, the Indian chases the Grizzly Bear, but when the wind
shifts 180 degrees, the Bear chases the Indian. This way they can symbolically
act out their school rivalry. Of course, since the wife came up with the plan,
she did make sure that the Grizzly Bear weathervane had the advantage of the
prevailing winds, so most of the time, when
you
look up you see the Cal
Bear weathervane chasing
the Stanford
Indian weathervane!
