Fiddler on the Roof is a well-known
Broadway musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book
by Joseph Stein that first opened on September 22, 1964. Fiddler was the
first Broadway musical to surpass the 3,000 performance mark, running for 3,242
performances, and held the record for longest-running Broadway musical in
history for almost 10 years.
Originally entitled simply Tevye, the
musical is based on Tevye and his Daughters, or Tevye the Milkman
originally published by the Russian Jewish author Sholom Aleichem in 1894. The
story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to
maintain his family and religious traditions while the world and civilization
around the shtetl change rapidly. These changes manifest themselves chiefly in
the strong-willed actions of Tevye's eldest three daughters — each daughter's
choice of husband moves progressively further and further away from established
village custom.
