The
fishermen in his dory is a classic weathervane design. Ours is made in a
combination of copper and brass or copper with optional gold leafed accents.
Brass is 70% copper so will patina fairly similarly to the copper. When gold
leaf is used, the contrast between the weathered copper and golden color is more
pronounced. If you’d like to see examples of weathered copper and brass with
gold leaf accents, click here:
Patina.
All our weathervanes contain weep holes to allow any water that gets inside the
sculpture piece a way to drain out. Weep holes are especially important for
weathervanes located in parts of the country that freeze, because ice expands
and can potentially damage the weathervane if the water does not have a way to
drain out before it can freeze. Because this vane has the potential to hold
quite a bit of water, the weep holes in the bottom of the boat are fairly
substantial. We have located the biggest one under the fisherman’s seat.
When
customers request it, we can gold leaf the name of their boat on the side of the
dory. You can see an example of this here. In another photo, you can see the
“lucky” pennies we added to the interior of the boat. For more information on
this wonderful tradition, click here:
“Lucky” Pennies.
Below is an except from an email we received from a customer shortly after she
received her new Fisherman and Dory Weathervane. This weathervane was a gift for
her husband’s 50th birthday. They live just outside Portland, Oregon
and are planning to display their vane in the garden.
"Oh my goodness, what a beautiful weathervane you made!! We think it is
fabulous in every way - the hand craftmanship, the substantial materials, the
articulate design details especially the boat panels & the face/hands & the
separation of the fisherman's legs, the overall size, the proportional size of
the boat name, the contrast in color tones of the copper and brass/gold leaf,
the fun of the 1957/2007 pennies... have been thanking you in my mind every
since it came just after your last email, and am horrified at myself for taking
so long to actually tell you. We are working with a landscape designer on other
garden issues, and where to put this beautiful weathervane is now at the top of
the list. "
Thank you all! Sheree.
A
dory is a
small, shallow draft boat of approximately 5 to 7 m
(15 to 22 ft)
in length. Variant spellings are doree and dorey (OED) and
dori. The British Navy spells it 'dorey'.
Lightweight and versatile, these boats are used in the open sea for commercial
fishing applications, as well as in whitewater rafting on interior rivers.
McKenzie River dory versions usually seat from two or three to four people
including the oarsman.
This copper
Fisherman & Dory Weather Vane features distinct tooling and Brass
and Gold accents. The image below links to our Fly Fisherman weather
