The Mohican Brave weathervane featured here is a variation on our original Indian Brave weathervane. It was commissioned for the main building at a private camp in the Adirondacks. We gilded portions of the weathervane for our customer but we also took photos of it as an all copper weathervane (prior to adding the gold leaf). Because our weathervanes are made to order, our customers can select what, if any, optional gold leaf they want and where it will be applied. Personally, I like adding at least some gold leaf to a weathervane accentuate the weathered copper. As the copper moves through the patina process, the gold leaf adds a bold visual element to the sculpture piece.

Because our weathervanes are made to order, we can make weathervanes for our customers that represent different indigenous people. Some examples of this are shown on this page. If you have an interest in a weathervane symbolic of a particular group of people (examples we have done to date include an iconic western cowboy, Fiddler on the Roof, Don Quixote, Ganesha or Kokopelli) , please let us know. We would be happy to work with you to create a beautiful and lasting tribute to a particular group of people.

This weathervane also represents a more sophisticated variation on a standard weathervane technique. Most weather vanes are made in a style called “mirror image”. A mirror image weathervane is identical on both sides of the design. This is a non-mirror image, which means that the brave was both a front and backside that are different from each other (see photos). Non-mirror image weathervanes are technically more difficult to make, as each side is unique and requires more time to create.

Indigenous peoples in what is now the United States are commonly called "American Indians" but more recently have been referred to as "Native Americans". Native Americans make up 2 percent of the population, with more than 6 million people identifying themselves as such, although only 1.8 million are registered tribal members. A minority of U.S. Native Americans live on Indian reservations.

He is so handsome, with his burnished brown figure set off by his arrow and loincloth glittering in the sun!   He is beautifully crafted, a piece of art and a future family heirloom. Thanks so much for doing such a beautiful job, and also for delivering him ahead of schedule!"
