Surf Board Weather Vane

Drawing

The LongBoard Surfboard Weathervane featured here was made in a custom 20” size for the customer who ordered it. We also added an optional gold leaf border around the surfboard. As the copper deepens to a deep chocolate brown, the gold leaf trim will stand out in beautiful contrast with the weathered copper. We can basically replicate any style surfboard and use optional gold and/or palladium (silver colored) leaf to show trim lines, decals, etc. specific to the surfer or surf shop for whom the weathervane is being made.

This particular weathervane was commissioned by a customer who was building a new home on the North Shore of Oahu which is a popular place for surfers. The North Shore, in the context of geography of the Island of Oahu, refers to the north-facing coastal area of Oahu between Ka’ena Point and Kahuku Point. The largest settlement is Hale’iwa. This area is best known for its massive waves, attracting surfers from all around the globe. The northern hemisphere winter months on the North Shore see a concentration of surfing activity, taking advantage of swells originating in the stormy North Pacific. Notable surfing spots include Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach.

A surfboard is an elongated platform used in the sport of surfing. Surfboards are relatively light, but are strong enough to support an individual standing on them while riding a breaking wave. They were invented in Hawaii, where they were known as papa he‘e nalu in the Hawaiian language. They were usually made of wood from local trees, such as koa, and were often over 15 feet (5 m) in length and extremely heavy. Major advances over the years include the addition of one or more fins on the bottom rear of the board to improve directional stability, and numerous improvements in materials and shape.

Longboards, as the name suggests, are longer (often 8 ft/2.4 m or more), and are also thicker and wider, with a more rounded nose than a shortboard, making them stable and buoyant. Shortboards are shorter (5–7 ft/1.5–2.1 m), thinner, and have a more pointed nose. They are not as wide as longboards and are typically more maneuverable. Other variants include guns, longboard guns, olos, fun-boards, fish, eggs, bonzers, quads, tow-boards, and hydrofoils.
