This
Angel weather vane
is
depicted sitting on the moon, gently raising her trumpet from her lap. In one
version of this weathervane, we put specially selected
“lucky pennies”
inside the star that is suspended from the tip of the moon. The pennies were
from the birth years of each family member. Not only did they have a “guardian
angel” looking over them but they had also “wished upon their lucky star”. This
weathervane has also been made as a special memorial tribute in honor of a loved
one who has passed on.
A comment
about this type of weather vane design. It is an example of what is called a
non-mirror image weathervane. This means that her position is slightly different
on each side of the sculpture piece. Some of our designs are mirror image, which
means the design is the same on both sides. Non-mirror images are more difficult
to make as it is more challenging to join the two disparate sides together, but
it often makes for a more visually interesting weathervane as both sides are
slightly different.
Please
see below for
more Angel on the Moon details
.
You will
also notice two slightly different versions of this design. In the larger photo,
her hair has been slightly modified and we have put a little space between her
wings and back to better define this section of her body. Both Angels featured
in these photos were made with optional gold leaf accents on their faces, arms,
feet and the moon. The copper on this weathervane will first patina a deep
chocolate brown color and then eventually turn a beautiful turquoise green. The
gold leaf adds a distinctive contrast to the weathered copper as it moves
through the patina process.

Angel Weathervane on
Moon, cont.
With this photo, we tried to catch the luminosity that
gold leaf takes on right at dusk. This is my favorite
time of day to look up and see the weathervane we have
on top of our home. The softly glowing gold against the
twilight sky is very, very beautiful. With her pensive,
gentle expression, the Angel on the Moon weathervane
would make a very welcoming figure to greet you as you
come and go from home.
When made without the optional gold leaf, we usually use
brass for the face, arms, feet and moon. Brass is 70%
copper and 30% zinc so it weathers very similarly to the
copper but you will still see a slight variation between
the two metals as it goes through the patina process.
Using brass as part of the angel sculpture piece is nice
because the North, South, East, West directional arms
are also brass and it helps pulls all the individual
components together into a cohesive whole. However,
because all our vanes are built to individual order, she
can also be made in all copper if that is your
preference. All our angels come with translucent glass
eyes and our customers get to select the eye color we
use for their individual weathervane.
Another
design in our mythological weathervane series that has a
similar appearance to the Angel on the Moon Weathervane
is our
Moon Goddess
weathervane. The Moon Goddess weathervane shown on our
website is made with copper and brass (no gold leaf) so
you can look at her to get a feel for how the Angel on
the Moon would look if made without the gold leaf. Brass
and gold leaf look very similar when the weathervane is
just finished however, the brass will darken over time,
while the gold will retain its light luminous
appearance.
