These photos were recently sent to
us by customers who display their Medium sized Cheshire Cat weathervane on a
deck in the hills overlooking the San Francisco Bay. You can see the light
shining through its translucent green glass eyes. Many customers display their
weathervanes down low on a deck or in a garden setting, rather than on the roof.
That way, many of the fine detail work, such as fur texture, individual teeth,
etc. can be seen and enjoyed.
The Cheshire Cat is a
fictional cat appearing in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
It appears and disappears at will, engaging Alice in amusing but sometimes
vexing conversation. The cat sometimes points out philosophical points that
annoy Alice. It does, however, appear to cheer her up when it turns up suddenly
at the Queen of Hearts' croquet field, and when sentenced to death baffles
everyone by making its body disappear, but its head remain visible, sparking a
massive argument between the King, the Queen and the executioner about whether
or not something that does not have a body can indeed be beheaded.
At one point, the cat disappears
gradually until nothing is left but its grin, prompting Alice to remark that she
has often seen a cat without a grin but never a grin without a cat. This has
become a point of notability for the cat: most people remember it most strongly
performing its vanishing act.

The Small sized Cheshire Cat
featured in the indoor photo has made an acquaintance! When light shines though
the window, you can actually see light coming through the Cheshire Cat’s eyes.
Surprisingly, a large number of our weathervanes are used indoors, as examples
of American Folk Art. |

This large Cheshire Cat was made a
customer in Pacific Grove, California. We personalized her version by
substituting the standard leaves for those of a Monterey Cypress Tree. In
addition, because she has Monarch Butterflies that over winter on her property,
we put a butterfly on the cat's tail.

The Small sized Cheshire Cat
weathervane pictured
at left was made as a gift for a couple in Paris, France. We put a
quote from Alice in Wonderland in French on their weathervane.
