The design, as featured in this photo, consists of the traditional copper weathervane, complimented by accents in nickel silver, gold leaf and brass. When the weathervane turns in the wind, the spoon "dances" around the dish creating a lively sense of motion.

Cow jumping over the Moon Weathervane

Hey, diddle diddle.

The cat and the fiddle,

The cow jumped over the Moon.

The Little Dog laughed

To see such sport,

And the Dish raw away

With the Spoon.

This whimsical weathervane design is one in our series of Children's Literature weathervane designs (click here for list). For those unfamiliar with the story of the Dish Running Away with the Spoon, it allegedly originated during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Based on source material from the World Book Encyclopedia, throughout her long life, Queen Elizabeth enjoyed matching wits with her ministers and courtiers. Some claimed that it was similar to the way a cat plays with mice. Moon and Lap-Dog were nicknames of two of her advisors.

Evenings were often spent feasting and dancing. Spoon was the nickname of one of her ladies in waiting who tasted the Queen's food before she ate. Dish was the nickname of the court official who brought the Queen's food to her. Dish and Spoon eventually eloped together. So yes, the Dish did run away with the Spoon!

The weathervane featured above was also inspired by the same poem. You can click on the image to go to the page that describes our Cow Jumping Over the Moon weathervane design.

Dish Running Away with the Spoon Weather Vane

featured at Norman Rockwell Museum

This custom weathervane has been on display at the Norman Rockwell Museum as a part of their contemporary weathervane exhibition entitled: Windblown: Contemporary American Weathervanes. The dates of the exhibition are July 16th through October 30th 2005. For more information about this exhibit, here is a link to the Norman Rockwell Museum: Norman Rockwell Museum and a review that describes the show: Windblown: Contemporary American Weathervanes.

To quote from a recent article describing this show, "This summer, sculptures on the grounds of the Norman Rockwell Museum will be blowing in the wind from July 16 through October 30 with a new exhibition, "Windblown: Contemporary American Weathervanes." Weathervanes, favored by the early American colonists as crowning designs for their meeting halls and public buildings, are enduring symbols of humankind's dependence upon the elements of wind and weather. Norman Rockwell, a weathervane enthusiast, topped his own studio with one. The wide array of weathervanes in the exhibition range from the whimsical to the profound." An article also appeared in the Albany, New York newspaper, in conjunction with the show. The Union Times quoted us for the article. If you are interested in reading it, here is a link: Times Union article quoting West Coast Weather Vanes at Norman Rockwell Museum
