Our
Lion of St Mark weathervane was commissioned by a customer on the
East Coast. Our lion is an interpretation based on several famous sculptures
found in Venice. This weathervane comes with a gold leafed mane, tail and the
text in the book. This design is somewhat unusual for a weathervane in that the
subject, the lion, is looking towards the viewer rather than seen in profile.
Because
of this, the weathervane was made in a “semi-mirror image” style. This means
that the lion faces you on both sides of the sculpture piece (rather than seeing
the back of his head on the reverse side). However, the rest of the body has two
distinct sides with the legs in different positions. For these reasons, this
type of design is tricky to pull off. However, in this case, I think the result
speaks for itself!
A more
traditional way to make this weathervane would be to show the lion’s head shown
in profile. For those with a more traditional bent, we also offer this design
with a profile head (above left bottom) for the same price. Customers can select
whichever view they prefer when they order. The drawing also gives you a feel
how we go from design drawing to finished weathervane.
St. Mark
was one of the four evangelists of the Christian Church and is considered the
patron saint of Venice. His symbols are the lion and a book due to his
authorship of the Gospel of Mark. His association with the lion comes from his
commentary on John the Baptist as a “voice crying out in the desert”, similar to
roar a lion.
We
have made several other weathervanes with biblical associations. They include
St. George and the Dragon,
St. Michael and the Dragon,
St. Nick, a number of
Angels and
Noah’s Ark.
We
have also made a number of mythological animals with religious associations.
They include the
Gargoyle,
Griffin,
Phoenix
and
Ganesha.
