The
Pegasus weathervane is one of our earliest designs and remains one of our most
popular weather vanes. Pegasus can be made as an all copper weathervane or we
can use brass or gold leaf for his mane and tail. He also comes with a choice of
different colored translucent glass jewels for his eyes.
Pegasus is
a perfect candidate for a weathervane, after all, what better place is there to
see a Winged Horse than up in the sky above your home? Because Pegasus has a
constellation named after him, Constellation Pegasus or the Pegasus
Constellation, he is a well known figure in the night sky. If you want to take
full advantage of your Pegasus weathervane, you might want to train a couple
lights on him at night so you can watch him soar through the night sky!
Pegasus
was a born when the Greek hero, Perseus, slew Medusa, a horrible monster with
snakes for hair. When Perseus cut off her head, Pegasus flew out full grown.
Later,
the goddess Athene told Bellerophon, a young Greek adventurer, how to catch
Pegasus with a golden bridle. After taming the mythical horse, Bellerophon and
Pegasus set off to slay the Chimera, a monstrous creature with the head of a
lion and the tail of a dragon.
After
many other successful adventures with Pegasus, Bellerophon decided to fly
without permission to Olympus to visit the gods themselves. Zeus, the greatest
of the Greek gods, sent a gadfly to sting Pegasus to keep the uninvited guest
out.
When
Pegasus reared, Bellerophon was thrown off. While Bellerophon survived his fall
with the aid of the goddess Athene, he was crippled for the rest of his life.
Pegasus continued his journey to Olympus where Zeus used him to carry his
thunderbolts. Eventually, Pegasus was made into the Constellation Pegasus.
Today, if you know where to look, you can still see him flying across the night
sky. saying, "Whenever I bring clouds over the earth
and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the
everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the
earth."
