In Western culture the White Stork is a symbol of childbirth. In Victorian times the details of human reproduction were difficult to approach, especially in reply to a child's query of "Where did I come from?"; "The stork brought you to us" was the tactic used to avoid discussion of sex. This habit was derived from the once popular superstition that storks were the harbingers of happiness and prosperity, and possibly from the habit of some storks of nesting atop chimneys, down which the new baby could be imagined as entering the house.

The image of a stork bearing an infant wrapped in a sling held in its beak is common in popular culture. The small pink or reddish patches often found on a newborn child's eyelids, between the eyes, on the upper lip, and on the nape of the neck are sometimes still called "stork bites". In reality they are clusters of developing veins that soon fade.

This Stork with Baby Weathervane is a part of our Storybook Character weathervane collection.  Custom copper weathervanes are part of our larger series of mythological weathervane designs that also feature Dragon weathervanes, Mermaid weathervanes and over 50 other mythological weathervane designs. Please visit our Mythological Weathervane page to learn more about our other Mythological weather vane designs.

A special customer testimonial:

In August 2009, we were contacted by a lovely woman named Lisa McCullum. She lives on the central Oregon coast and is a midwife by professional training. She was turning 50 and her mother wanted to get her a special gift to celebrate the occasion. What she wanted was a Stork and Baby weathervane. She found our website on the internet and placed an order for this weathervane in the medium size (two-foot sculpture piece) size. Here is a picture of her beautiful home and gardens. After sending us this photo, together we decided the best sized weathervane would be a medium size (two-foot sculpture piece) and the best place for her new weathervane would be on top of the garage, just above the circle vent.

Because we make each weathervane to order, she opted to have us make her Stork & Baby weathervane with emerald translucent glass jewels for it eyes, a personalized inscription which we were to put on the horizontal tube that represents the ground under the nest and stork’s feet, and a number of  “Lucky Pennies”, some of which were to go in the stork and the remainder to go inside the baby. She also decided to have optional gold leaf put on the stork’s beak and legs as well as the baby’s head and toes.

Our goal was to have her new weathervane done and shipped to her in time for the holidays. I’ll let Lisa pick up the story from here.

Up it goes on the roof with the contractor.  Hoping he doesn't drop it.

Customer Photo 7, Stork weathervane story

How many does it take to install?  I guess 3 ...the contractor and 2 sons.  (You guys do have the direction right side up don't you?)  Of course they installed it on the coldest day of the year when we were expecting freezing rain.  the roof was wet and slippery.  But they said they were fine doing it.

What do you think?  No, what do you think?

Customer Photo 9, Stork weathervane story

I think it's already starting to turn penny colored.  It was crazy super coppery shiny the first few days.  It was so shiny, it was almost blinding.  You can see the vane from down the street.  This is the most beautiful thing.  My midwife colleague who lives about 6 houses down the street from me is green with envy.
