This Cannon weathervane is made with a fully 3-D cannon barrel. It can be made entirely in copper or we can add optional brass, gold leaf, palladium leaf and or nickel silver. Our original cannon weathervane design was commissioned by a couple whose last name was Cannon.

This cannon weathervane was originally commissioned by a wife for her husband’s birthday. His nickname is “Cannon”, hence the selection of this particular subject matter. Many of our customers follow the tradition of selecting a design based on a family name. For example we have made Fox weathervanes for customers whose last name is Fox, a Hare weathervane for a family named Hare, a Raven weathervane for a family whose last name means raven in Czechoslovakian. One of my favorite examples of this tradition was a special weathervane commissioned for a couple who went by the nicknames of “Bunny” and “Bear”. Follow this link to see the vane we designed for them: Bear and Bunny weathervane.

Because this weathervane was a birthday present, we also followed the tradition of the “lucky” pennies. In addition to a penny from the year the weathervane was made, we also included a penny from the year her husband was born. This then became part of the gift when he received it. If you look closely at the photo showing a frontal view of the cannon, you can actually see the birthday penny we included.

This particular cannon weathervane is based on an 1812 British cannon. I’ve included on photo showing the weathervane before it was gilded. In the other views, you can see we’ve added both optional gold and palladium leaf to give it a more visually dynamic appearance. They plan to put this weathervane on a gazebo in their backyard. The advantage to this location is that they will be able to see it from inside the house. Weathervanes do look beautiful up on the roof and many people consider them the crowning touch on their home however, in some cases, the neighbors or people driving down the street will get to admire them more often than the family on whose house it sits! That is why some people install them on outbuildings so they themselves can enjoy them as well.
