This
Peace Sign Weathervane was designed for a delightful woman from Southern
California. She is an avid collector of weathervanes and had been checking out
our website for several years after clipping an article about our business out
of a newspaper. She really wanted a Peace Sign Weathervane and had
searched the internet trying to find one. She finally contacted us directly and
we created this weathervane especially for her.
Her son is a
well known musician from London and specializes in playing Medieval and
Renaissance instruments. He was in the San Francisco Bay Area to perform a
series of Early Music Concerts, one of which was held at our local university.
His mother flew here and met him and then they both came by our studio for a
tour and to pick up the completed weather vane. Ken and I were then invited to
hear her son play at a concert held at the UC Santa Cruz campus which we enjoyed
immensely.
As an
option, we do offer a number of
different style arrows.
If so desired, this Peace Sign can be combined with any one of these to create
just the style weathervane you want.
The internationally recognized symbol for peace was originally designed for the
British nuclear disarmament movement by Gerald Holtom in 1958. Holtom, an artist
and designer, made it for a march from Trafalgar Square, London to the Atomic
Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in England, organized by the
Direct Action Committee to take place in April and supported by the Campaign for
Nuclear Disarmament. Eric Austen (1922–1999) adapted Holtom's designs to
ceramic lapel badges.
The symbol became the badge of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and wearing
it became a sign of support for the campaign for unilateral nuclear disarmament
by Britain. It is now used as a symbol for all anti-nuclear disarmament around
the world. The current peace sign is not patented or restricted so that anyone,
anywhere can use it anyway they want.
