Installation Photos from our Customers
This is the principal mounting method for most cupola applications. Weather vanes are traditionally located at the peak of the cupola in a prominent location. Most cupolas have a cross brace as a structural support onto which the spire can be mounted using a cupola flange.
IMPORTANT:
In
order to send you the correct length spire (aka stainless steel rod), we
need to know the internal distance from the cross brace inside the cupola
to the peak of the cupola. That way we can make sure that the correct amount of spire
sticks out the top of the cupola to receive the vane sculpture &
it’s components. Tools
and supplies recommended for installing your weather vane:
1. Using your level, drill the appropriate sized hole through the peak of the cupola. The hole size will be determined by the largest diameter of the rod we send you for your weather vane.
2. The vertical rod drops down inside the cupola until it hits the cross brace (fig 1) THIS ROD MUST BE PLUMB IN ORDER FOR THE WEATHER VANE SCULPTURE PIECE TO TURN FREELY IN THE WIND (fig 2). (Note: the rod itself does not turn, only the sculpture piece).
3.
The cupola flange is screwed to the top of the cross brace and
receives the vertical rod. Tighten the setscrew in the cupola
flange to secure the rod tightly and caulk the hole at the top of the peak
of the cupola.
4. Assemble ring, globes and directionals on spire. Use your compass to orient the brass directional letter N to true north (fig 3).
5. Coat the section of the spire that will be covered by the vane sculpture piece with grease. 6. Insert ONE steel ball into the mounting tube at the base of the weather vane ornament. Then slide the vane on top of spire. (fig 4). If you have a 3/8” spindle on the top 10” of your rod, check to see that the vane clears the flared section of the spire. If not, add a second ball bearing and check again. (Additional ball bearings are included as backups if you accidentally drop one while installing your weather vane.)
CUPOLA INSTALLATION - without Cross Brace (for medium sized vanes only) Cross-Section view of Cupola Click on thumbnail to view details (Cupola install without cross brace)
This is an alternative mounting method for our medium sized vanes on cupolas where a cross brace is not possible. Based on the internal height dimension inside the cupola, we will fabricate a custom Spire Extension to be used for installing the weathervane.
IMPORTANT: In order to send you the correct length spire (aka stainless steel rod) and spire extension, we need to know the internal distance from the peak of the cupola to the roof below it. That way we can make sure that the correct amount of spire sticks out the top of the cupola to receive the vane sculpture & it's components.
