INSTALLING WEATHERVANE IN GARDEN,
On a Pole
(Printable PDF)
Click on
thumbnail to view details
You will need:
-
3/4" inside diameter tube
galvanized or stainless steel (have it cut to whatever height desired).
-
Drill & tap two threaded
holes in top 8" of tube for use with set screws.
-
Drill a hole that goes
completely through tube 10-12 inches from the top and insert bolt.
Screw on nut and tighten. (This acts as a stop for spire)
OR...
Insert a 3/4" diameter
rod into tube described in #1 above. (Note: this rod needs to be 10 - 12 inches
shorter than tube) Rod should be flush with the tube at the bottom.
To assemble:
- Dig hole approximately 2 ft deep and 2 ft wide (the
taller the pole, the deeper and wider the hole needs to be) - fill with one sack of Ready
Mix concrete.
- Insert tube assembly into the center of the wet
cement.
- MAKE SURE TUBE ASSEMBLY IS PLUMB AND STAYS PLUMB WHILE
CONCRETE SETS UP (usually about 3 days)
- Allow cement to set completely before installing
weather vane and harness.
-
Insert spire (thickest diameter if tapered) and make sure it reaches the
bottom of the hole. Then check to make sure it is vertical. If it is not,
use a nail, wooden shim, etc. to position it correctly. The spire must be
vertical in order for your new weather vane to spin freely. NEVER
TUG OR PULL ON SPIRE.
-
Assemble ring, globes and directionals on spire.
Use your compass to orient the brass directional letter N to
true north.
-
Coat the section of the spire that will be covered by the vane sculpture
piece with grease.
-
Insert ONE steel ball into the mounting tube at the base of the
weather vane ornament. (The remaining steel balls are spares in case
you drop the first one during the installation.) Then slide the vane on top of spire. If you have a
3/8” spindle on the top 10” of your rod, check to see that the vane
clears the flared section of the spire. If not, add a second ball bearing
and check again.
- Be sure
to tighten set screws so vertical rod does not move.
Enjoy your new weather vane!
