MOUNT A WEATHERVANE USING V-BRACKET

Weathervane installation using a v-mount.jpg (9432 bytes)  Click on thumbnail to view details

For mounting on peaked roofs that do not have a ridge pole. The flanges can be bent to conform to the pitch of your roof.

Note: The use of bolts, washers and nuts are the most secure method for installation. Appropriate sizes are available at hardware stores. Ten stainless steel screws are provided where the use of bolts, etc. are inappropriate. Make sure screws are securely attached to the framing.

Tools and supplies recommended for mounting your weather vane:

a. Electric drill with 1/4 inch drill bit for bolts (or 9/64 inch for screws)

b. Magnetic pilot level

c. Medium size slotted screwdriver
d. Small Crescent wrench

e. Flashing Caulk
f.  Heavy grease
g. Compass

This assembly requires two people if using nuts and bolts or one person if using lag screws.

1. Connect vertical tube to V-shaped section of the mounting bracket. (If bracket is Stainless Steel, the tube is already welded on the bracket)

2. Bend flanges evenly to conform to roof pitch. Using a level, check to make sure mounting tube is vertical.

3. Drill one 1/4" brass bolt test hole. Inside attic, make sure hole is located in a place free of impediments yet has enough structural support to sustain the weather vane.

4. Drill remaining nine bolt holes. Caulk with flashing caulk. Slip brass bolts in place. Inside Person: Slip on washers and thread nuts.

5. Insert spire into mounting tube and tighten both set screws.

6. Both the inside and outside persons should begin to tighten bolts, double checking the spire to be sure it is straight using a level as they go. NEVER TUG OR PULL ON SPIRE WHILE IN MOUNT (BRACKET MAY PULL OUT).

7. Caulk around positioned spire to seal the hole. If you'd like, you can optionally apply some wet patch too.

8. Assemble ring, globes and directionals on spire. Use your compass to orient the brass directional letter N to true north

9. Coat the section of the spire that will be covered by the vane sculpture piece with grease.

10.  Insert ONE steel ball into the mounting tube at the base of the weather vane ornament. (The remaining steel balls are spares in case you drop the first one during the installation.) Then slide the vane on top of spire. If you have a 3/8” spindle on the top 10” of your rod, check to see that the vane clears the flared section of the spire. If not, add a second ball bearing and check again.

Weathervane special installation mount.jpg (61030 bytes) The photo to the left was sent to us by a customer who installed our 30 pound MG Sports Car weather vane on top of their barn.  Their barn did not have a ridge pole so they had their own custom heavy duty bracket made to insure it was well secured to the roof.
