Sizes
and Display Options
Many of our weather vanes are available in
up to four sizes. The size that will work best for you will depend on where you would like to
display it.
Below, is a photo showing LizAnne (5'
8") next to our Chanticleer Rooster weathervane design in 3 standard
sizes (1 ft, 2ft, & 3ft). The photo on the right shows an Extra-Large
( 4 ft.) Chanticleer Rooster weathervane. For more detailed size descriptions, see
below.

Small vane on deck

SMALL VANES:
Our small sized vanes are fully functional weather vanes that have been
scaled down so that the sculpture piece itself is just approximately one foot in size. The
maximum dimension (either horizontal or vertical depending on the design) will usually be
between 12 and 14 inches. The table top display stand (which we call the harness) will add
another nine inches to the coverall height and includes a free standing brass base
approximately 5 1/4 inches in diameter.
Another option for our small sized vanes is a
wall mount. This installation method uses the same circular brass base as our table top
version but the brass rod is bent to a 90 degree angle so it may be installed on a
vertical surface like a wall or main support of a deck railing.
Small vanes are designed to be viewed from a distance of 20
feet or less. Popular locations for our small sized vanes are on top of deck, in the
patio, on a little pedestal in a garden setting or even as an indoor sculpture piece. They
can be placed on small structures like a children's playhouse, a potting shed or even a
chicken coop or rabbit hutch! One of their nicest features is that they are usually
displayed down lower than our medium or large size vanes so they can be seen from inside
the house. |

Medium vane in garden |
MEDIUM VANES:
Our most popular sized vanes are the medium The maximum dimension of the
sculpture piece (either horizontal or vertical depending on the design) will usually be
between 24 and 26 inches. The harness (vertical rod, brass directional and two copper
globes) will add approximately 24 to 30 inches below the sculpture piece it self. How much
more depends on your method of installation. It, too, can be attached to a vertical
surface with the addition of our optional Vertical Surface Mounting Bracket.
Our medium sized vanes are appropriate for a wide variety of
applications. You can put them on top of a two car garage, a detached out building, a
gazebo, a back fence, as a center piece in a garden or on top of a smaller house (less
that ~1500 square feet). |

Large vane on roof
|
LARGE VANES:
These are our largest standard sized vanes. The
maximum dimension (either horizontal or vertical depending or the design) will usually be
between 36 and 38 inches. The harness will add approximately 24 to 30 inches below the
sculpture piece itself. How much more depends on your method of installation. It, too, can
be attached to a vertical surface with the addition of our optional Vertical Surface
Mounting Bracket.
Large vanes are really designed to go on top of bigger
homes, public facilities or barns. If you are not sure between two sizes, it's usually
best to err towards the larger vane. They do tend to scale down in size once they are
mounted up on a roof! |

EXTRA LARGE

Our studio above is
approximately 700 square feet and a vane this size is really designed to go a
top a structure 3500 square feet or larger. If a structure is
between3,500-11,000 square feet, it probably merits an oversized vane.
Due to the
increased size and weight of our extra large weathervanes, they require a higher
degree of technical skill to make, customized installation hardware (stainless
steel rod, handspun copper globes, oversized brass directionals). Pricing
factors in these additional requirements.
Please
contact us to discuss your situation if you feel an oversized vane may be
required

STILL NOT CERTAIN ABOUT SIZING YOUR VANE?
The sizing suggestions described above are admittedly quite
general. A good way to more accurately determine the size that would work best for you is
to find a flat sheet of cardboard and very roughly sketch out a one, two or three foot
approximation of the design you are considering. Cut it out and have someone go stand near
the location where you are thinking of putting the weather vane. If it is a roof top,
there is no need to climb up on it; just have the person stand below the spot and hold up
the cut out. This should give you a good feeling as to whether the size is right or not.
A couple other factors that may affect the size you select
are the design itself and the visible environment surrounding the vane. Some of our
designs are quite delicate (for example, our Hummingbird and Flowers or Grape Vine weather
vanes). Others are quite massive (for example, our Grizzly Bear or Triceratops Dinosaur).
Depending on which design you desire, it may be appropriate to select the medium Grizzly
Bear or a large Hummingbird and Flowers for the same location.
Further, the background setting behind the weather vane may
also affect your sizing decision. Generally, if the weather vane is silhouetted against
the sky, you can get away with a smaller weather vane because its profile is so distinctly
visible. However, if there are trees, a hillside or other buildings in the background it
may be better to err on the large size so that is stands out against a competitive
background.
