Bat Family Weathervane
|
|
Our original
Bat
weathervane
consisted of a parent bat and two baby bats. It was commissioned by a family
with two children. Another customer saw the
Bat Family
weathervane
and requested that we make him a weathervane showcasing just a single bat. He
ordered his in the small (one-foot sculpture piece) size and mounted it on his
deck railing. We recently finished a version of this design for a couple in
France who reside in an area with numerous bat colonies.
Interestingly, many of the customer who ordered our bat weathervane have ordered
other weathervanes at the same time. One customer ordered a
Raven weathervane
and another customer ordered a
Dragonfly weathervane.
The Bat weathervane featured here has brown glass eyes with black pupils and
optional gold leaf on the bat’s inner wing panels and the arrow tip and
fletching.
Recently, one of our customers sent
us some photos of their Bat Weathervane, along with the following
comments:
"Finally I have
pictures of the Bat who, just today, found his way to our rooftop! We
had a superb day with sun and little wind which allowed my patient handy
man (and gardener) Jerome to get the installation just right. I think
you can see that he (the Bat, not Jerome) is spectacular in his new
home! I cannot tell you how delighted I am with the vane and my patient
Jerome just returned from lunch in the village and remarked that he saw
the gold flashing from the next mountaintop!
I think when my
husband finally sees the vane; he will be thrilled and amazed. The gold
made all the difference! You guys were delightful to work with and the
customized mount made us able to get the vane up even though the
European mounting system is much different than the US system. Thanks
again for this work of art….now that we see the effect, we will think on
our next vane….though it would be hard to beat a flashing gold bat
catching the Provencal sun! "
Warmest regards, Michelle
A bat is a mammal in the
order Chiroptera. Their most distinguishing feature is that their
forelimbs are developed as wings, making them the only mammals in the world
naturally capable of flight (though other mammals, such as flying squirrels and
gliding flying possums, can glide for limited distances). The word Chiroptera
comes from the Greek words cheir "hand" and pteron "wing," as the
structure of the open wing is very similar to an outspread human hand with a
membrane (patagium) between the fingers that also stretches between hand and
body. |
