The Monarch Butterfly weathervane featured here was
made in copper with gold leafed accents on its wings and body. Because we make
each weathervane to order, we can change the wing shape and/or markings to
represent a different kind of butterfly. We can also use palladium in addition
to, or in place of, the gold
leaf to create a tri-color effect.
A butterfly is
mainly
a day-flying insect of the order Lepidoptera, the butterflies and moths.
Like other holometabolous insects, the butterfly's life
cycle consists of four parts, egg, larva, pupa and
adult. Butterflies have large, often brightly colored wings, and conspicuous,
fluttering flight. Butterflies comprise the true
butterflies (superfamily Papilionoidea), the skippers (superfamily
Hesperioidea) and the moth-butterflies (superfamily Hedyloidea).
All the many other families within the Lepidoptera are referred to as moths.
The
butterfly species Danaus
plexippus is commonly known as the monarch
butterfly. It
is perhaps the most well-known of all North American butterflies. Its wings
feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern, with a wingspan of
8.5–12.5 cm (3.34 in–4.92in). (The viceroy butterfly has a similar size, color,
and pattern, but can be distinguished by an extra black stripe across the
hindwing.) Female monarchs have darker veins on their wings, and the males have
a spot in the center of each hindwing from which pheromones are released. Male
butterflies
are also slightly larger.
