Cougar Weathervane Detail

Cougar Weathervane

Our
Cougar Weathervane was originally
commissioned by a couple we met at a show here in California. They were building
a new home in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and wanted this weathervane to be the
finishing touch that greeting visitors as they drove up the driveway. Since then
we have made versions of this weathervane for customers in such far-flung
locations as Vancouver Island in Canada, in Virginia, Utah and Washington State.
In this design, we’ve tried to
capture the graceful and sleek appearance of one of the world’s most beautiful
large cats. In the version shown here, the cat is made in copper with a gold
leafed lower face and palladium leafed check spots and tail tip. The mountain on
which it crouches is brass. Brass is 70% copper so it will patina similarly to
the copper but with subtle variations. We like to pick up some brass in the
sculpture piece as the directionals (North, South, East & West arms) are also
brass and it helps tie everything in together. The gold and palladium leaf will
remain their original color. The cougar also has brown glass eyes with black
pupils to give it a more animated appearance. Because we make each weathervane
to order, we can work with our customers if they prefer different metal and leaf
combinations.
Also known as a Mountain Lion,
Puma, Panther, Painter, Mountain Screamer or Catamount, the cougar
has
the greatest range of any wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere,
extending from Yukon in Canada to the southern Andes of South America. It is the
second heaviest cat in the New World, after the jaguar, and the fourth heaviest
in the world, after the
tiger,
lion, and jaguar, although it is most closely related
to smaller felines. A capable stalk-and-ambush predator, the cougar pursues a
wide variety of prey. Primary food sources include ungulates such as
deer and
bighorn sheep, as well as domestic
cattle,
horses, and
goats, particularly in the northern part of its range,
but it hunts species as small as insects and rodents. While it is a large
predator, it is not always the dominant species in its range, as when it
competes for prey with animals such as the
gray wolf,
black bear, and the
grizzly bear. It is a reclusive cat and usually avoids
people.
This weathervane works nicely in a
paired grouping such as with a deer, big horn sheep, etc. If you order two or
more weathervanes from us at the same time, we offer a 10% discount on both
vanes.

The photos
shown here were graciously sent to us by a customer in Evergreen, Colorado.
The large (3-foot sculpture piece) Cougar weathervane and extra-large
(4-foot sculpture piece) Triple Mustang weathervane are both on top of
octagon shaped turrets on their pool house. The home is at 8000 feet
elevation and the weathervane were tied into their lightning protection
system.
We gold
leafed the mustang’s manes and tails and the cougar’s muzzle and tail tip.
The hillsides beneath the cougar and the mustangs were done in brass.
