The Dragonfly weather vane (Odonata Anisoptera) featured in this image consists of an all copper dragonfly with brass reeds, a copper marsh flower and arrow tip and fletching.  Our vanes are made to order, so the choice of metals can be modified at the time an order is placed.  This realistic Dragonfly Weathervane is a perfect complement to a water element garden or in tandem placement with our Leaping Trout Weathervane

The eyes are made from translucent faceted glass jewels. People who order this weather vane get to choose the eye color they want for their weather vane. Click here to view the eye color selections.

This design should be particularly lovely once the copper has eventually turned green. Many dragonflies are a beautiful turquoise blue color which the weathered copper closely mimics.

An attractive option is to gold leaf the little flower that rises up out of the marsh grass. The gold is warrantied by the manufacturer to stay bright and shiny for ten years but in reality, the majority of the gold will still be there far longer. Even antique copper weather vanes one hundred years old (or even older) can show traces of the original gold leaf. Once the copper or brass have weathered green, the contrast with the gold leaf is especially lovely. Click here for more information on patinas and gold leafing.

This is one of our few designs that looks best viewed from either above or below rather than straight on at eye level. Below are several photos customers have graciously sent to us that show their Dragonfly weather vanes on location.

Other insect weathervanes offered by West Coast Weather Vanes include Mayflies, Ladybugs, and a Praying Mantis

Dragonflies typically eat mosquitoes, midges and other small insects like flies, bees, and butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic. Dragonflies do not normally bite or sting humans, though they will bite in order to escape, if grasped by the abdomen. They are valued as predators that help control populations of harmful insects, such as mosquitoes. Dragonflies are one of several insects commonly referred to as "mosquito hawks" in North America.

"I've enclosed a few pictures of our beautiful dragonfly in situ on the gazebo. Hope you enjoy them. It is just beautiful, a perfect choice. Thanks to all for your efforts on our behalf."
