The Elephants of the genus Loxodonta, known collectively as African elephants, are currently found in 37 countries in Africa.

African elephants are distinguished from Asian elephants in several ways, the most noticeable being their ears. Africans' ears are much larger and are shaped - some note - like the continent of their origin. The African is typically larger than the Asian and has a concave back. Both African males and females have external tusks and are usually less hairy than their Asian cousins.

This particular elephant weathervane provides me with an opportunity to discuss the difference the actual design makes in the overall presence of the sculpture piece. The canoe and paddler weathervane (below) is a very slender and slight design, even in the three-foot size. Now view it below next to the three-foot elephant weathervane. Both are “large” sized weathervanes, but the elephant has a much bigger presence than the canoer does, simply by the nature of the design itself.

Sizing a weathervane

The design makes a different when selecting the correct sized weathervane for your site

Please click on the thumbnails above to view larger image.

When sizing a weathervane for your particular site, it is important to keep in mind the actual design you intend to install. While a two-foot elephant weathervane might be perfectly adequate for the top of a two car garage, if your design preference was the Canoe weathervane, you might want to go with the next larger size, even though it would be going atop the exact same location.

We are always happy to make suggestions or be of assistance if you are questions regarding the appropriate sized weathervane for a given location. Just give us a call or drop us and email and give us a few specifics and we will be glad to guide you through the process.
