Our Rhinoceros Weathervane is a favorite here at
West Coast Weather Vanes. All of us really like the way this weathervane turns
out. It really seems to come alive! The use of brown glass eyes with black
pupils give it a realistic look. We even talked with one customer about perching
several Oxpickers or Tick Birds on its back! As with all our weathervanes,
this Rhino weather vane can be personalized with optional gold leafing on its
horns.
For some reason we have made several Rhino
weathervanes for customers who live in Michigan. I’m not exactly sure why
Michigan is a hotspot for Rhino weathervanes, but there must be something going
on there. In another case, a wife commissioned one of the Rhinoceros
weathervanes for her husband’s birthday. His nickname was Rhino. We also made
another Rhinoceros weathervane for the Houston Zoo. They put it on top of the
Endangered Species Carousel.
Another customer was nice enough to send us a photo
of his weathervane after it was installed. He collects Rhinoceros artwork and
put one of our Rhino vanes on top of his new building. (See above)
There are five living species of Rhinos that fall
into three categories. The two African species, the White Rhinoceros and
the Black Rhinoceros, diverged during the early Pliocene (about 5 million years
ago) but the Dicerotini group to which they belong originated in the
middle Miocene, about 14.2 million years ago. The main difference between black
and white rhinos is the shape of their mouths. White rhinos have broad flat lips
for grazing and black rhinos have long pointed lips for eating foliage. A
popular — if unverified — theory claims that the name White Rhinoceros was
actually a mistake, or rather a corruption of the word wyd ("wide"
in Afrikaans), referring to their square lips.
Rhino horns are wrongly considered to be
particularly effective when used to treat fevers and even "life saving" by
traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, which in turn provides a sales
market. To prevent poaching in certain areas, rhinos have been tranquilized and
their horns removed. Many rhino range States have stockpiles of rhino horns.
There are legends about rhinoceros stamping out
fires in Malaysia, India, and Burma. The mythical rhinoceros has a special name
in Malay, badak api, where badak means rhinoceros and api means fire. The animal
would come when a fire is lit in the forest and stomp it out.. There are no
recent confirmations of this phenomenon. However, this legend has been
reinforced by the film The Gods Must Be Crazy, where an African rhinoceros is
shown to be putting out two campfires
Many of our customers like to place several of our
weathervanes on the various roof peaks of their homes or out-buildings, creating
a "theme". Other African animal weathervanes which might peak your interest: Lions, Elephants, Tigers, Giraffes and
the Hippo.
