he Box Turtle weathervane displayed here was made in the large size (3-foot sculpture piece) as a barn warming gift for the son of one of our best customers. They have many box turtles roaming their property in Florida and are particularly found of these gentle reptiles. In addition to the Box Turtle weather vane, our customer has also given other West Coast Weather Vanes as gifts to various family members and has several of her own as well including the Alligator Chasing a Fish and Large Mouth Bass.
This Box Turtle weathervane can be made either entirely in copper, or with a copper body and brass shell (or visa versa) or with optional gold leafed accents as depicted here. The version with the optional gold leafed accents most closely resembles a real box turtle and as the copper naturally darkens to a deep chocolate brown color, the visual effect should become even more dramatic and lifelike.
The box turtle is one of
several species of turtles. It can refer to either those of the genera Cuora
or Pyxidea, which are the Asian box turtles, or more commonly to species
of the genus Terrapene, the North American box turtles. They are largely
characterized by having a domed shell, which is hinged at the bottom, allowing
the animal to close its shell tightly to escape predators. Otherwise the two
genera are very different in habitat, behavior, and appearance, and as such are
not even classified in the same family. The

At the time the order is placed, a deposit of 1/3 is due. Upon receipt of the deposit, time will be reserved in our schedule. The balance is due when the weather vane has been completed and prior to shipping. Deposits can be made with Visa, MasterCard or check.
