We offer our Passage Horse Weather Vane with and without a rider. Because our weathervanes are handcrafted to order, we are often able to accommodate customer’s requests for additional personalization. For example, we could easily make a male dressage rider instead of the female rider shown here. We can even match facial features, body build and the particular style clothing worn by the individual being represented, creating a portrait. We would be happy to discuss any personalization with you.
As our technical skill has matured, we are often able to make the entire lower body as one piece. Looking closely at the horse pictured you can see, at the time we made this particular horse, we needed to break the body at the hindquarters. The head and neck are crafted as a separate piece, with the joint placed at a natural contour in the horse’s body. So, even within the same limited edition series, no two sculptures are ever exactly alike.
With so few of us making handmade copper weathervanes, the individuality of each sculpture piece is highly valued by collectors of American Folk Art. Even though we use paper patterns to cut out the copper, all the shaping is done by hand and eye with the use of a rawhide hammer over custom shaped blocks of wood. Each wood block is designed to create a different contour in the metal. In addition, each weather vane crafted in our studio is made from start to finish by one artisan who then signs his own work.
The Passage Horse is also available as a silhouette Weathervane. We optionally gild the mane, tail and leg wraps in gold or palladium leaf to add visual interest but it can be crafted entirely in copper if desired.
