The Koi Weather Vane, Cyprinus carpio, featured in this image consists of a copper fish with brass waves. This particular weather vane was made as a portrait and our customer had us gold leaf the fins, parts of the body and tail to match the markings of his favorite fish. Because our vanes are custom made to order, the choice of metals can be modified at the time an order is placed. The eyes are made from handcrafted colored glass and have black pupils. People who order this weather vane get to choose the eye color they want for their weather vane.
In customization, body contours, tail and fin shapes and length, distinctive markings, etc. can all be added or modified, if desired. When placed in a garden setting near a koi pond, gold and or palladium leafed Koi weathervanes look lovely, especially when reflecting on the dark surface of the water. They serve to complement the flashes of brilliant color from the fish moving just below the pond’s surface.
Koi or more specifically nishikigoi, literally “brocaded carp”, are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens.
Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.
