This Pheasant Weather Vane, Phasianus colchicus, depicts a pheasant startled into flight. As an option the beak, facial markings, neck ring and feet can be gilded to create a nice contrast with the copper body. The curved feather is actually based on a real pheasant’s feather. For the vane pictured we used optional brass to depict the reeds in which the pheasant was resting.
A very striking feature of this weathervane are the red glass eyes with black pupils that we use to mimic the real bird’s appearance. As the weather vane turns in the wind, the sunlight can sometimes catch this eye color, visible even from the ground.
Male pheasants in a weathervane lend themselves particularly to gilding, being highly ornate naturally, with bright colors and adornments such as wattles and long tails (males are usually larger than females and have longer tails).
A really memorable project we did for one customer involved two weathervanes. On one gable he put a Pheasant Weathervane and on the other gable he put a portrait weathervane of his German Shorthair Pointer. The two weather vanes interact in the wind together in a way that often draws lively comments from people visiting his home.
