Heraldry Weathervanes
Heraldry has its roots in Roman times but came into full flower during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It started as a way of identifying armored knights during combat, tournaments or jousts. The devices ranged from simple geometric shapes to sophisticated drawings of animals, plants and mythological creatures. A formal system of describing (blazon) and registering these coats of arms was developed and refined in the ensuing years. Banners and flags displaying coats of arms were also in wide use. Many cities and towns in Europe, as well as branches of the aristocracy, proudly display their coats of arms to this day.
